April 1st
Teams of 4 people.
Heats of 3 teams with a staggered starting man by lane to account for distance (middle and outside lanes stagger forward, common finish line for all three lanes.)
Competitors line up at the common finish line single file in their lane. First runners are staggered at the start by lane.
On go, the first runner takes off with the baton. When the runner reaches the back of their team’s line, they must pass the baton forward to the front runner. Baton must touch the hands of each competitor in the line as it is passed up.
Each runner completes one lap. A team’s time is recorded when all four runners have completed their laps and the baton reaches the hands of the first runner in front. The teams are not in direct competition with each other for a “finish” yet, they are setting times.
After every team has competed once, the times of each team are stacked fastest to slowest. Then we do it like a motor race qualifying session i.e., the bottom X number of teams (leaving a multiple of 3) are eliminated and then we start over for the next session.
So, for example, lets say we have 11 teams compete. Each team sets their time. We list the times in a row (all 11) and teams 10 and 11 are eliminated. Then we have 9 teams. We do it again with fresh times being set. After everyone goes again, teams 7, 8, and 9 are eliminated. Do it again, teams 4, 5, and 6, are eliminate. Then the final race is between teams 1, 2, and 3 for finishing places.
